Move it for Young Minds

September 22, 2018

Move-It for Young Minds (MFYM) is a charity event in support of children and youth who are living with mental health challenges. Right now, an estimated 1.2 million Canadian children and youth are affected by mental illness, but less than 20 per cent will receive appropriate treatment (Mental Health Commission of Canada).

Our community’s support contributes to the efforts RVH is making to address mental health challenges with the 8-bed unit that is expected to receive 3,000 patients visits this year. These services are offered to youth ages 8-17, but has helped children as young as 7. RVH has partnered with the Simcoe County District School Board and will have a teacher onsite during the 2018-19’ school year to ensure patients don’t fall behind in their studies. Since 2015, the health centre has also operated a regional Urgent Consult Clinic in its Emergency department to identify and assess youth at risk. This is the only unit of its kind in Simcoe County and with our help, it will allow for improved awareness and resources for the unit.
